 How it all began

Our story

We want to offer an alternative to regular toys - especially those made from plastic - that are invading our world. Providing other options and including adults and kids in the creative process can have a meaningful and long lasting impact on their consuming behaviour. Even if parts of the product fall apart - as they even do with plastic objects - they can be reused and integrated into a new version of the car without environmental harm. We believe that durable, individualised designs are the way forward, and we aim to provide them.
We're not just a brand; we're a small team of two dreamers. Atelier Scrap was crafted by our hands and hearts. Our favorite clients are undoubtedly our two children, who inspired us to bring this brand to life.

Florent d’Heilly & Isabell Thrun

“The toy industry uses 40 tons of plastic for every $1 million in revenues and is the most plastic-intensive industry in the world. 90% of the toys on the market are made of plastic. Even if plastic toys are great for keeping kids busy and helping them to learn and play, the effects of their production and disposal are environmentally problematic. Plastic toys can contain heavy metals such as lead or cadmium or other harmful chemicals such as dioxins. [...] 80 percent of all toys end up somewhere on a trash heap. There are many reasons why toys get thrown away, but most of them centre on the fact that parents don’t know what else to do once their children have outgrown them.” - Green Matters 2021 - Full article here

OUR PHILOSOPHY

What if we tell you that the art toy that you are seeing here is a combination of dry bread, seawater, recycled skateboards and paper scraps that were compressed and moulded into the form of a car?
We create long lasting products and toys from discarded objects & waste materials.

In our case, living in Barcelona, we produce all wood based components at TMDC (a Wood-Coworking Space), and source the wood from used skateboards from SOUR SOLUTION . We use our home paper waste and combine it with used egg cartons from THE EGG LAB . We get discarded bread from the bakery next door and fetch the salt water from the nearby Nova Icaria beach, which is a 20 minute bike ride from our atelier.

We follow the zero-waste principles - to maximise recycling, minimise waste, reduce consumption and ensure that products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into nature or the marketplace.

We design with sustainability in mind, ensuring that they are eco-friendly and have a minimal impact on the environment. Together with our customers, we strive to reduce our carbon footprint and create a more sustainable future for everyone. And for each purchase we donate 1Euro to PLANT FOR THE PLANET, currently we support Reforesting Doñana.

All items are unique and original, handcrafted by Florent d’Heilly.
